September 15, 2009 – To celebrate its 40th anniversary, UQAM has installed an ephemeral work in Place Pasteur, located in the heart of the University campus and the Quartier Latin.
40 Years, 40 Chairs, which will occupy Place Pasteur until October 31, was created by students Karine Galarneau, Judith Portier and Patsy Van Roost as their final project in the Graduate Diploma (DESS) in Event Design.
Creating ties with the public
This ephemeral installation symbolizes 40 years in the life of a decidedly
urban university with an inviting, symbolically charged occupancy of Place Pasteur,
located on Saint-Denis Street between de Maisonneuve and Sainte-Catherine. The
three artists chose a theme that reflects both the University and its celebrations,
with cords “tying” Place Pasteur and 40 chairs from the University's
classrooms, one for each year of UQAM's existence, from 1969 to 2009.
We believe that this project really reflects UQAM: creative, accessible, close to the public and, above all, creating ties between knowledge and people," notes Karine Galarneau. The installation surrounds the site, appropriates it, and lets passers-by rediscover Place Pasteur from a different angle.”
You can even spend time communing with Louis Pasteur in one of the chairs that seats you face to face with the famous scientist, whose bust is erected in Place Pasteur.
The Arts at UQAM
UQAM offers the most complete arts curriculum in Canada. It is the only
Canadian University offering courses in every artistic discipline.
